Yes, when my period is there: I indulge. When you're not feeling well, you deserve to mung out on your sofa, to watch films and to satisfy a few cravings. But did you know a lot of food items have beneficial properties, that can help with your mood and relief pain? Here are some of my favorite munchies that I think you should try.
1. Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate!
Chocolate! Yum! Packed with endorphin-releasing cocoa chocolate is the ultimate period food. Now the trick here is: get real dark chocolate with a high cocoa content. That Cadbury's bar is not only bad news for the rainforest; it's also bad for your body. However; dark chocolate is packed with nutrients, promotes a healthy bloodflow and lowers blood pressure and is a powerful source of anti-oxidants.
2. Doritas - get your cheese fix!
Doritos are another fav of mine. The "nacho cheese" flavoured version contains the protein calcium which promotes the production of melatonin in the brain. Melatonin is the relaxing hormone that induces sleep. No wonder I so easily doze off on my couch! Cheese is a healthy source of animals fat, protein and riboflavin too. Plus, Doritos are delicious.
3. Let's go Bananas
Bananas are truly a miracle food. They contain potassium, magnesium and are packed with fibers. The potassium helps maintain fluid levels in the body and regulates the movement of nutrients and waste products in and out of cells. The two different types of fibres in bananas promote good bacteria for a healthy gut - which is now closely linked to our overall mental wellbeing.
Bananas are often praised for their serotonin content, which is a hormone our brains produce naturally to ward of depression. In reality, the serotonin in bananas has little influece on the level of this hormone in our brain, although scientists are still investigating if bananas shoot up the amount of serotonin our brains are able to produce.
